In March

Over the last month or so I have been working a bit more consistently on my painting and particularly on sketching. I’ve been trying to build up a resource of sketches of people which I can include in future paintings. I had a great weekend in the attractive town of Geraldine with my art group at the end of last month which resulted in a couple of paintings. You can check out some of my recent work below.

While I was in Geraldine I visited the studio of John Badcock (click on his name to visit his site) and found his work particularly inspiring. Later I visited the Safron Gallery in Timaru which is showing an exhibition of John’s recent work as well as all 100 works from his Passing People series. These are near lifesize full body portraits of people on hanging canvas which John painted very quickly. While they are quite different to his other work they are a truly stunning collection. Have a look!

Another exhibition which inspired me this month was W A Sutton’s “Watercolours of Italy” at the Christchurch Art Gallery. Anyone with an interest in watercolour painting should have a look at these works
